Free Speech Advocates Gear up for Protester Trial

Jeff Zurawski and Sarah Hartfield were arrested in May for displaying a banner in view of I 355 that read "Impeach Bush and Cheney - Liars " . Their subsequent arrest, and the addition of more serious charges have led to the appearance that politics may be playing a role in order to stifle political dissent in DuPage County . Attorney Shawn Collins and the Collins Law Firm has chosen to take this case pro bono. For more information about Shawn Collins:

The next scheduled hearing is December 13th, 9:30 am, Building 505 (Judicial Center) Room 4007. This article pretty adequately sums it up. The hearing on Monday, October 15th set the date for the December hearing. Mark your calendar, but also watch for updates in the event this case takes another "twist or turn".

Picketers want charges dropped against war protesters

The legal debate that arose after two anti-war activists were arrested in DuPage County spilled into the street Thursday when protesters called on prosecutors to drop the charges.

About two dozen sign-toting protesters rallied outside the county government complex along County Farm Road in Wheaton.

They argue the activists are being wrongly prosecuted and beseeched DuPage State's Attorney Joseph Birkett to dismiss the misdemeanor case.

Peaceful Protest Nixed in West Suburbs

On May 6, Jeff Zurawski ripped up three large cardboard boxes and taped them together to make a 12-foot banner saying "IMPEACH Bush and Cheney — LIARS."

He and a friend, Sarah Hartfield, then headed to a pedestrian bridge over the Illinois North-South Tollway (I-355) in an unincorporated area of DuPage County. They placed the banner, along with an upside-down American flag, inside the bridge's fencing.
