Picketers want charges dropped against war protesters

The legal debate that arose after two anti-war activists were arrested in DuPage County spilled into the street Thursday when protesters called on prosecutors to drop the charges.

About two dozen sign-toting protesters rallied outside the county government complex along County Farm Road in Wheaton.

They argue the activists are being wrongly prosecuted and beseeched DuPage State's Attorney Joseph Birkett to dismiss the misdemeanor case.

Peaceful Protest Nixed in West Suburbs

On May 6, Jeff Zurawski ripped up three large cardboard boxes and taped them together to make a 12-foot banner saying "IMPEACH Bush and Cheney — LIARS."

He and a friend, Sarah Hartfield, then headed to a pedestrian bridge over the Illinois North-South Tollway (I-355) in an unincorporated area of DuPage County. They placed the banner, along with an upside-down American flag, inside the bridge's fencing.
